NASA has a well-documented history of creating amazing imagery in their efforts to explore the vast expanse of space. Their latest achievement is a 1.5-billion pixel image that depicts the Andromeda galaxy as seen by the Hubble telescope. The final image takes up more than 4 GB of total storage and required 7,398 individual exposures that were later stitched together into one massive photo. The final resolution checks in at a massive 69,536 x 22, 230.
variety of star-forming regions in nearby galaxies. The galaxies are part of the Hubble Space Telescope's Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS), the sharpest, most comprehensive ultraviolet-light survey of star-forming galaxies in the nearby universe. The six images consist of two dwarf galaxies (UGC 5340 and UGCA 281) and four large spiral galaxies (NGC 3368, NGC 3627, NGC 6744, and NGC 4258).

NASA has captured an extremely crisp infrared image of the center of our Milky Way galaxy. Spanning a distance of more than 600 light-years, this panorama reveals details within the dense swirls of gas and dust in high resolution, opening the door to future research into how massive stars are forming and what's feeding the supermassive black hole at our galaxy's core.

Simulated image of a portion of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) highlighting the high resolution, large field of view, and unique footprint of NASA's upcoming Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). Made using data from hundreds of Hubble observations, the image spans about 34,000 light-years (about 1/5 of Andromeda's full disk), showcasing the red and near-infrared light of more than 50 million individual stars. With investigations into everything from black holes to exoplanets, the Hubble Telescope has changed not only the face of astronomy, but also our very sense of being in the universe, on the 25th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, TASCHEN celebrates its most breathtaking deep space images both as scientific feats and as photographic masterpieces. Ultra high-resolution and taken with almost no background light, these pictures have answered some of the most compelling questions of time
A stack of 12 images of two brown dwarf stars, Luhman 16A and Luhman 16B, within the system Luhman 16AB, about 6 light-years away. Luhman 16A and Luhman 16B orbit each other at a distance of only three times the distance between the Earth and the Sun, so these observations are a showcase for the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's precision and high resolution. Luhman 16AB is the third closest stellar system to Earth after Alpha Centauri and Barnard's Star. (Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, L. Bedin)
